copy characters from the line above/below

Do you still remember QEdit? In my opinion one of the best editors for DOS. I was using QEdit a lot and later TSE, The SemWare Editor, an even more enhanced rewrite of QEdit. One of the feature I used a lot was a function to copy the character from the line above to the current position. Very handy if you need to duplicate most, but not all of the previous line. I don’t use this function much any more, but when I sit down and fill in my bookkeeping journal, it would still be very useful. Indeed, I found vim has this functionality too! When in insert mode, simply press CTRL-y to copy the character from the line above the cursor or CTRL-e to copy the character from the line below the cursor.
