Once, when I picked up a book from the local library, the librarian asked to tell her what I thought about the book when I would bring it back. Well, why not write a few lines about all the books I read so everybody could see what I thought about it? I'm often also happy to have friends recommend a certain book or tell me this and that is not really worth reading. I won't comment about the tons of books I have read so far, but about books I read from now on.

The book tells both, the history of the Petrakis family of Plaka and the history of the leprosy colony on the island Spinalonga, just off Plaka. It starts in the present time with Alexis, who does not know anything about her mother's past and soon goes into a retrospective to tell the whole story beginning with her great-grandmother.
The story is much about positive attitude, despite many hardships. If you are not a native English speaker and want to understand every single word, you'll likely spend a lot of time with your dictionary. However, if you can live with understanding the general meaning rather than every single word, then it is simple enough to understand without much effort.
As the main story is sandwiched in between an outer, neither relevant nor interesting side-story, it took me some time to get going. Once you get to part 2 (chapter 3), it gets much better.
